A modern landfill is not simply a hole where trash gets dumped. It is an engineered containment system designed to isolate waste from surrounding groundwater and to manage the gas that decomposing organic material produces over decades.
The Basic Structure of a Sanitary Landfill
According to Wikipedia's overview of landfills, sanitary landfills are built in phases. The base is prepared with compacted clay and a synthetic membrane liner that separates waste from the soil and groundwater below. Waste is then spread in layers called cells, each compacted by heavy equipment and covered daily with a thin layer of soil to control odor, pests, and windblown debris.
Above the liner, a leachate collection system captures liquid that percolates through the waste mass and routes it to treatment. Leachate is the technical term for this contaminated liquid, and its management is one of the primary reasons modern landfill engineering is so complex compared to earlier open-dump practices.
Landfill Gas
Organic material buried in a landfill decomposes anaerobically, meaning without oxygen, producing landfill gas. That gas is primarily methane, roughly 50 percent by volume, with most of the remainder being carbon dioxide. Older landfills simply vented or flared this gas. How Long Landfills Last
A landfill cell has a finite capacity. When it reaches its permitted height, it is capped with a final cover layer, monitored for decades for gas and leachate, and ultimately closed. In Florida, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection oversees solid waste facility permitting and closure requirements for facilities throughout Orange County and the greater Orlando area.
The limited lifespan of any given landfill cell is part of why diverting material through proper waste management and recycling programs matters. Every ton that gets composted, recycled, or otherwise diverted is a ton that does not consume permitted landfill space.
Why Sorting at the Source Matters
When the wrong material goes into a bin, it can contaminate an otherwise recyclable load at the processing facility, sending the entire batch to a landfill instead.
